Common VOCABULARY
Unit 1: Mapping Skills/Geography
1. Latitude: Imaginary measurement lines that measure North and South of the equator.
2. Longitude: Imaginary measurement lines that measure East and West of the Prime Meridian.
3. Geography: The study of EVERYTHING on earth from rocks and rainfall to people and places.
4. Compass Rose: a circle showing the principal directions printed on a map or chart.
5. Key/Legend: the wording on a map or diagram explaining the symbols used.
6. Map Scale: refers to the relationship (or ratio) between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground. For example, on a 1:100000 scale map, 1cm on the map equals 1km on the ground.
